Clean water, we all deserve it, by Martina Nevado, The Orator HCCC, 2017
Did you know that Ryan Hreljac at the age of 6 years old raised money to build a well in Africa?  The vehemence of this child to reach his goal is only comparable to the indifference of adults witnessing the shortcomings an needs of others. How different the world would have been if we never stopped feeling compassion for others as when we were children and we realized that the most natural thing for us, others lack.
Ryan’s first grade teacher told him that the school project was going to be raising money for children in Africa who were dying because they had no water.  With the innocence of a child o his age, Ryan asked, ‘why don’t they open the faucet to get water’.  His teacher explained to him about the children’s life in Africa, which moved Ryan so much that he promised he will bring the money to build the well they needed.  His parents seeing that he was determined to get his goal, supported him by tipping his household chores.  Also, the neighbors helped him, until his story was published in the local newspaper and with community support, he managed to build their first well in Uganda.  Where he was received as a hero by the children of the school where the well was built.
Today, Ryan Hreljac is 28 years old. He has helped to build 1000 wells around the world.  Thanks to these wells, children in developing countries have access to the clean water they need to cook their meals and live a healthier life.  Also, he has traveled to many countries to educate and inform the youth about the water crisis on our planet and the care they should have with it.  Unfortunately, if we continue to neglect our planet, even Ryan’s wells could be affected.  Global warming and waste of water could dry and contaminate the wells.
Like Ryan, other activists and governments around the world have become aware of this issue.  “Clean air and water, and a livable climate are inalienable human right” said Leonardo DiCaprio, Academy award in his speech at the United Nations in 2014. “If the price of water was anything like the price of gasoline, nobody would leave the tap running while they brushed their teeth”, said Sadhu Johnston, the Commissioner for Chicago’s Department of Environment, in the article: “Know your footprint: Water”.  But we do not just neglect water when we leave the tap open.
Also, we neglect water with the use of chemicals that pollute the atmosphere which caused the ozone hole, thus, global warming.  This imbalance in nature further aggravates the situation of places that already suffered from continuous droughts and floods.  As the increasing water shortage in Africa and the floods known as the Corrientes del Nino, which this year claimed lives in Peru and Colombia as well.  “We are seeing extreme weather events, increased temperatures and the West Antarctica and Greenland Ice Sheets melting. None of this is rhetoric and none of this is hysteria.  It is a fact”, emphasizes Leonardo DiCaprio at UN.
However, it seems that the work of Ryan’s Well and other pro earth organizations, have been effective. Scientists have detected that the ozone hole is shrinking.  “Humans have started to do the right thing in order to convert the atmosphere back towards what it was before the industrial revolution started”, said Dr. Ken Jucks, Atmosphere Researcher of NASA, to BBC News, 2014.
So, if you are complaining about your life today, imagine if you did not have access to clean water every day, what would you do? We must become aware of the damage we cause to our planet and begin to take care of it.  The natural balance of the earth allows the water, treasure of our planet, to reach all mankind. Let’s inherit a better world for our children. Let’s take care of our environment. Let’s take care of the water in our planet.
“I found out where my puzzle piece fits in the world and that is with water.  I just hope everyone else finds out where their puzzle piece fits, too.”  Ryan Hreljac, founder of the Ryan’s Well Foundation.

Katherine Johnson, a beautiful mind

Before modern technology appeared, there were great minds that did the work of a computer. These prodigious minds were so efficient that they could be consider as “human computers”.  Even, the velocity of these artifacts could not compete with the effectiveness of the human brain. Proof of this is that the astronaut John Glen trusted Katherine Johnson, a black female scientist, to verify if the data of the computer was correct. She had to calculate the flight paths of the NASA rockets manually.  Glen entrusted his life in the hands of Johnson.  He treated her with the respect she deserved.
The world took a step forward when man reached the moon, but we stepped back 20 steps when those who made this scientific advance possible, were not given the recognition they deserved.
Much more could have been done if other souls thirsting for knowledge would had been inspired and encouragement to make the human being grow. It is then demonstrated that segregation only brings backwardness. Inclusion is progress.
It is difficult to understand and accept that, although Katherine Johnson's work was of great importance to humanity, it was not known until after 50 years. The name of this scientist should have appeared in the history books alongside the prodigious minds that transformed the world.  However, it was not until 2016 that the movie “Hidden Figures” was released, that the world knew about her.  It was based on the story of Katherine and other mathematicians such as Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson and other scientists who also worked at NASA.   In the same year Katherine was awarded with Presidential Medal of Freedom, by President Obama.
Katherine was born in Virginia in 1918 and was a child prodigy who loved math. Before working at NASA, she worked as a teacher for 10 years.  Despite the misogyny and segregation of the time, in which Katherine developed in her youth, it is to applaud her effort and that of those who, despite the adversities, achieve their dream of working on what they were passionate about.  Perseverance and positive attitude to adversity leads the human being to achieve their goals. It is necessary to avoid excuses when we want to accomplish our aspirations in life. No matter the moment, it does not matter if the world opposes or the difficulties that arise. Always the opportunities are there for those who want to take them. A rejection cannot take away the desire to make our dreams come true. Katherine suffered continuous rejection in her work, but her attitude and her love for what she did allowed her to achieve her goals. Not giving up is the answer to success. Strength and perseverance disarm any opposition to our plans and our attitude to life is what shaped our destiny.
Katherine passed away at the age of 101, on February 24, 2020.
"Find what your dream is and work at it, because if you like what you are doing, you will do well" – Katherine Johnson -

Behold the greatness inside you...blooming

You may feel that you are breaking into pieces,
but all falling pieces can be recovered turning into beautiful flowers
blossoming and rising like butterflies reaching the sky.
Behold the greatness inside you…blooming
Your strength is not in your skin; It is inside you
and now,
it screams to free itself.
Let it sprout outside,
do not freeze missing that beautiful piece of yourself
that will not return. Thank you for it!
This emptiness doesn’t exist
it must be filled of love.
With Love for yourself, with love from your loved ones,
with love for your life.
You're still here!
cry!, scream!, mourn
with all your heart,
then, breathe deeply ... You're still here!
Give up why?
If you have the strength to claim out loud,
you must have more strength to get up.
We're here to support you, do not leave us alone in this journey ...
You're so beautiful, you're still here!
Live, give!
Live to give others, not to give up on yourself ...
Do not feel desperate. You are not unnoticed
You are evolving. You are breathing!
Do not ask why, but nevertheless,
the answer is for the reason that today you”ll decide ...
you are still here because the world is still waiting for your shining.
You will be here eternally
You are always here in our hearts.
Your strength will make you take wise decisions.
You are amazing!
A beautiful piece of art that came to this world to enlighten us.
We want to see you succeed.
This will be your great performance!
Always remember, before we win, we lose.
You only have one path left, victory!

LA MUJER DE HOY

4/5/2019

Mujer, El príncipe azul no existe.

Tocosh, considered by the Incas a gift from the sun, is used to heal some infections of the body due to its penicillin content. Tocosh is the potato that must undergo a fermentation process to develop penicillin. In the first place, the potatoes that are chosen are the ones that begin to decompose (in any other place they would be thrown away). These potatoes are placed in a mesh bag and left in a pond next to the river bank on a bed of stones for 7 months. The water must go through the potatoes and not stagnate so as not to develop bacteria. During this process, the potato is fermented and penicillin is produced. After the fermentation is achieved, the tocosh is left to dry in the sun and stored for later consumption. Another way to process potatoes in the area of the Peruvian Sierra is to let this tubercle freeze outside. Thanks to the cold of this region Benefits of Tocosh Most people do not like to consume tocosh because due to the fermentation process, the smell is very strong. Its healing properties are mainly known by the Andean Peruvians who, in turn, inherited this knowledge from their ancestors and descendants of the Inca Empire. According to the Inca Ancestors, serving tocosh is a sign of love and respect for those who will consume it. The healing properties of tocosh are exceptional and vital. Tocosh is credited with the power to cure chronic gastritis and stomach ulcers because it is antimicrobial and also increases the intestinal flora and protects the stomach allowing the consumer to improve digestion. In addition, tocosh strengthens the immune system and prevents osteoporosis. So too, tocosh heals hemorrhoids and inflammation of the urinary tract. Tocosh is used to treat bronchial diseases such as simple colds, asthma and is used as an alternative medicine to strengthen patients who have cured of tuberculosis. It has a high caloric value that benefits the consumer of Andean areas especially in winter seasons. Due precisely to its high caloric content is not recommended in patients suffering from hypertension. tocosh has several presentations. The most common are the mazamorras of tocosh prepared by the ladies of the Huaraz region in Peru. Large pots of this porridge are sold in the morning in the village markets.
